For electromagnetic flow meters, the pipe must stay full. Downstream of a partially open control valve, the line may drain. Symbols That Change the Loop Logic

A pressure reducing valve upstream of a Coriolis meter can keep the product in liquid phase. A bypass line around a control valve changes the flow split. If the flow meter sits in the main line only, the bypass flow is not measured. A hand valve on the bypass can look like a control valve symbol but without the actuator. Trace the loop number. If there is no loop number, it is usually a manual block valve.

For batching and custody transfer, you often see FQ for flow totalizer. The FQ receives pulses from the flow meter or integrates the 4-20 mA signal. The FV may still control flow. The FQ is separate but shares the same loop number in many designs.

Common Loop Scenarios and Meter Selection

Water and wastewater. DN50 to DN600 electromagnetic flow meter with 4-20 mA HART, rubber or PTFE liner. Install upstream of a butterfly control valve. Ensure full pipe and grounding rings for water below 20 µS/cm.

Chemical dosing. DN10 to DN25 Coriolis mass flow meter or oval gear meter. Use Coriolis when density or mass flow is needed. Use oval gear for clean viscous liquids from 1 cP to 1000 cP. Place before the back pressure valve or control valve.

Steam and gas. DN40 to DN200 vortex flow meter with pressure and temperature compensation. If the gas is wet or saturated, use a thermal mass flow meter or a Coriolis meter with filtration. Install the meter upstream of the control valve when possible.

Food and beverage. DN25 to DN100 sanitary Coriolis or electromagnetic meter. CIP systems need the meter to handle 80 °C to 120 °C cleaning fluids. Match the flow meter symbol with the FIC tag to confirm the cleaning loop is not measured as product flow.
